Veronica Nunes

 

Critically acclaimed Brazilian singer and cavaquinho player Veronica Nunes is being considered as one of the most original up and coming artists from Brazil in recent years. 

She has already caught the attention of American star Paul Simon, former Brazilian minister of culture Gilberto Gil, as well as Seu Jorge, who highly praised her music and artistry.

Born in a musical family, Veronica is the daughter of a classical pianist, who inspired her to follow a musical career from an early age.  She started at fifteen years old as background vocalist for the reggae band Monte Zion.  

Veronica studied music at Escola Portátil in her hometown of Rio de Janeiro, where she had the opportunity of learning music from some of Brazil’s most respected Choro and Samba musicians.

In 2009, she moved to New York City where she joined the famous 11-piece Brazilian band Brazooka, under the direction of trombonist and multi-instrumentalist Carlos Darci, a former member of the legendary Brazilian funk band, Banda Black Rio, as well as Vitória Régia, the band that backed Tim Maia, one of the most famous Brazilian singers in the history of Brazilian popular music.

At Brazooka band, she met the Grammy® winning guitarist Ricardo Vogt.  Veronica and Ricardo left the band to begin their own project, recording their debut album entitled

Pra Fugir da Saudade in 2013, which led them to tour the world presenting this much celebrated project, which features 3 other Grammy® winning musicians: drummer Rafael Barata; trombonist Alan Ferber; and bassist Arthur Maia.  

Veronica is also featured as an endorsing artist for Godin Guitars, who designed their first cavaquinho especially for Veronica, and the instrument is now distributed worldwide.

In 2016, Veronica released her second album, Tem Mais Samba which was an evolved sequence of her debut album Pra Fugir da Saudade.   The album has fresh arrangements and interpretations of a carefully selected repertoire of classical and contemporary Brazilian songs. Produced by Ricardo Vogt, the album features extraordinaire musicians Marshall Gilkes on trombone, Gregoire Maret on harmonica, Leo Genovese on fender rhodes and Rafael Barata on drums and percussion. The album was recorded in New York, Rio de Janeiro and Austin, and mastered in Tokyo.

Veronica Nunes and Ricardo Vogt have performed together at several major music festivals around the world, including the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival in 2021.They have performed at the Hong Kong International Jazz Festival - Hong Kong, Tribowl Jazz Festival - South Korea, Beishan World Music Festival - China, DJD Music Festival - China, Beishan International Jazz Festival, China, Hua Hin International Music Festival - Thailand, Goa International Music Festival - India, St Barths Summer Sessions, St Barths.

Veronica Nunes is currently finishing recording her third album. The album was recorded in Rio de Janeiro and NYC and produced by Ricardo Vogt and Arthur Maia. The third album features extraordinaire guests Arthur Maia on bass, Paulo Braga on drums, Ricardo Vogt on guitar, Jerry Bergonzi on saxophone, Jonathan Powell on trumpet, Devon Yesberger on piano and Rafael Barata on drums and percussion.

With a Brazilian groove that will catch anyone’s attention, Ricardo Vogt is grabbing everyone’s ears. Born in Santa Cruz do Sul, RS – Brazil, started his studies in jazz guitar performance at Berklee College of Music in 2004. While at Berklee, Grammy® winning jazz pianist Eliane Elias heard him and hired him on the spot. Ricardo graduated and began touring the world performing at many prestigious jazz festivals as a member of her quartet. Soon after he was invited by Esperanza Spalding to join her band, which led to several worldwide tours as well as numerous television appearances. Among the performances stand out the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony awarded for president Barack Obama; Rock in Rio, as well as opening shows for Prince, Carlos Santana and George Benson.

As a studio musician Ricardo has worked extensively recording on several albums in many different genres, including Esperanza Spalding’s Chamber Music Society, which awarded her the Grammy® for Best New Artist and features Ricardo Vogt alongside Milton Nascimento, and Radio Music Society, winner of 2 Grammys® where Ricardo plays with Jack DeJohnette, Joe Lovano and Leo Genovese

Ricardo is fully endorsed by Godin Guitars since 2006. Recently Godin developed a special guitar for Ricardo which has a bass string and an alternate tuning. The guitar is a signature series called ‘Multiac Ambiance tuned for Ricardo Vogt’ and is featured on his project with Brazilian musician Veronica Nunes

Ricardo is also a distinguished singer/songwriter. One of his compositions is featured on Sergio Mendes latest album called Magic. He also has written several songs in partnership with Milton Nascimento and Pedro Bernardo. Their songs are being released in an album produced by Ricardo that also features American jazz star Esperanza Spalding on bass.
